17-Year-Old Anambra Boy Gets Wish To Wed After Threatening Parents With Suicide

The unusual happened recently in Okofia village, Otolo Nnewi, Anambra state, where a 17-year-old boy was said to have gotten his wish to wed his 16-year-old lover after threatening his parents with suicide.

The boy, whose name was given as Somto, reportedly insisted on getting wedded to his girlfriend after putting her in the family way.

According reports on social media, efforts by Somto’s parents to stop him proved abortive as he threatened to kill himself if he was not allowed to have his way. He was said to have also dropped out of school following the incident.

It was gathered that the boy’s parents were left with no option but to support the little boy in order to avert the unforeseen.

“The modern-day Romeo threatened to commit suicide if he was not allowed to marry his Juliet who he impregnated,” read a Facebook post by one Moji Danisa.

Somto’s parents were also said to have opened a retail shop for him to kick-start life as a married man.

A photo of the traditional wedding between the teenagers which went viral on social media attracted a lot of reactions. Below are some of the reactions.

“They may not have started right, but with support, they will do just fine,” said Facebook user Brown Onyekachi.

Another user, Princess Feyikemi Ayoola Egbeyemi, believes the teenagers would be fine with the guidance and support of their parents.

“Both parents should guide them without being overbearing. This could be their destiny and obviously the loves him too or else she would have said no. I prefer this rather than sleeping around and committing abortion that can lead to death,” said Egbeyemi.

But Eyitemi Taire predicts that “tough times” await the teenage couple while Eliashib Ime-James said, “that guy will go back to school. Age is on his side. My fear is with the girl. Her values in life will change, he has to work hard to retain her love.”

Others who reacted to the news said they believe the young boy could go back to school at a later stage, but expressed fear about the girl’s education and future.
