As the planned formation of a ‘new mega party’ begins to dawn on the All Progressives Congress (APC), indications have emerged that the APC leadership is taking deliberate steps to make the atmosphere in the party calm for President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, against the 2019 general elections.

The news that some political bigwigs are perfecting plans to float a ‘new mega party’ had filtered in some days back, with promoters of the said new party strategising on how to bring influential politicians from all geopolitical zones on board, so as to displace the APC government.

All eyes are said to now be on Saraki, as proponents of the new mega party may snatch the Senate President from the APC.

Just yesterday, for the first time in 18 months since his controversial swearing in as Senate President, Saraki met with the National Working Committee NWC of the APC, with chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in attendance.

Oyegun was said to have admitted that the party had made initial mistakes by going against the June 9 National Assembly leadership elections that ushered in Bukola Saraki as Senate president and Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Unfortunately, it is clear that these were first steps since we came into office that created problems. The very nature itself of the amalgamating parties, created its own issues all of which has tended, up till now, affected the mode of operations and the level of interactions between the various arms of government and the party,” Oyegun said.

“So, we have a unique, God-given opportunity to take a look at ourselves, take a look at the National Assembly, a look at the party and at the way we all interact between ourselves and the governed; it is my hope that this will be the very best of this high level interaction,” the party chairman said.

There are further indications that contrary to the initial alleged plans to oust Saraki from office, the Senate President is now being guided jealously by the APC leadership against seeking another platform in 2019 for his political aspirations.

As, perhaps, part of efforts to appease Saraki, the APC leadership, last week, appointed the Senate President’s political godson, Bolaji Abdullahi, as National Publicity Secretary of the party.
