2023: Group Led By Southerner Kicks Against Rotational Presidency In Nigeria

A group known as The Transformation, weekend, said rotation of Nigeria’s presidency was not in the interest of the country.

It therefore canvassed for a president with the political wherewithal who would emerge through popular votes devoid of regional considerations.

Jude Ugwu, the group’s leader, in a statement made available to THE WHISTLER in Abakalili, said his body was after a president who would transform Nigeria to be able to cater for the needs and aspirations of its citizens.

The statement read, “The Transformation rejects the proposed rotation of Nigeria’s presidency between the north and the south.

“While The Transformation acknowledges the difficult and historical issues surrounding the opportunities and lack of opportunities thereof for various ethnic groups in Nigeria to ascend to the office of the presidency, we believe that only a presidency won through a persuasive argument based on clear and objective policies and programmes is good enough for Nigeria.

“We totally reject the notion that the office of the presidency should be passed around between corrupt politicians in the north and south of Nigeria, respectively. That is clearly an attempt to legitimise corruption, unaccountability, and mediocrity fully and finally by the current ruling elite who have never hidden their desire to steal Nigeria to death.

“There is no doubt that the ultimate beneficiaries of this idea are the inept and corrupt politicians who have led Nigeria to the graveyard. More so, it will completely disenfranchise all the non-major ethnic groups in Nigeria from aspiring to the highest political office in a country where they should have an equal stake as much as anyone else.

“The Transformation believes in the noble goal of using politics for the greater good of the society. And our members are determined to pursue the objective of using the Green Manifesto to completely transform Nigeria from its current state of failing into a great, modern, and prosperous nation centred on justice, law, and order.”

THE WHISTLER reports that Kogi governor Mr Yahaya Bello said rotating Nigeria’s presidential slot is unconstitutional. Mr Bello has of late been receiving support from notable Nigerian youths to contest the 2023 presidential election.

Among his endorsers are footballers Mikel Obi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and some Nollywood celebrities.
