37 Killed In Kaduna Communal Clash

No fewer than 37 people have been confirmed dead after fresh violence involving suspected herdsmen and farmers ensued on Tuesday in Kaduna state.

It was gathered that the incident occurred in Kajuru Local Government Area of the state.

Trouble started after some youth stormed a village in Ungwan Uka to avenge the death of a suspected herdsman.

The angry youths were said to have attacked and killed one man at his farm in Banono village.

However, youths in the affected village launched a reprisal attack on Monday.

It was gathered that the reprisal attack led to the death of five youths alleged to be involved in the killing of the herdsman.

The incident led to another round of attack as the Kadara youths mobilised and attacked Fulani settlements in the area, burning their tents while living scores of them dead.

An eye witness said security personnels rushed to the scene and restored calm in the area, but violence started again after the agents left.

According to the eye witness the fresh violence led to the death of another 19 people. He said the victims were buried in a mass grave.

“These are the bodies that have been recovered. We do not know the actual number of casualties as our people are scattered all over running for dear life,” the eyewitness said.

Yakubu Sabo, acting spokesman of the Kaduna state police command‎, confirmed that there were attacks in the area.

He said the Police and the Army have, however, gone to the place and brought the situation under control, but was unable to give details of the number of casualties.

The fresh attacks comes days after the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, hosted an all-inconclusive meeting of critical stakeholders of Southern Kaduna as it continued its longstanding mediation for dialogue, reconciliation and peace building in the troubled region.

Communities in Southern Kaduna have experienced violent crisis resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties in the past.
