Our $450m Sugar Plantation In Niger Will Be Longer Than Lagos-Ibadan Expressway – Dangote

As part of moves to ensure sufficiency in sugar production in the country, Dangote Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Niger State Government for the establishment of a $450million integrated sugar industry.

The Pan African Conglomerate President, Aliko Dangote, said the project will generate over 15,000 jobs in the state and bring about a complete economic turn-around for the state.

The $450million pact which was signed in the government house will see the company producing raw sugarcane on 16,000 hectares or 160 kilometre square of land at Lavun Local Government through an out-grower scheme.

Lagos to Ibadan expressway is estimated between 120 kilometres and 130 kilometers — more than 30 kilometres shorter than the proposed sugar plantation.

Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Group, in a brief remark shortly after signing the MoU in Minna, Niger State, said that the project would be supplemented by an out-grower scheme to produce 12,000 tons of sugar cane per day.

“Dangote Group is a firm believer in the vast economic potential of Nigeria. We have decided to invest in local sugar production in Niger because of the vast arable land available in the state,” he said.

According to him, the sugar project will commence in September, after compensations had been paid to the host communities.
