About nine operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS), were killed by pipeline vandals in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Wednesday.

A Police source who pleaded anonymity revealed that the hoodlums ambushed the operatives in what he described as a ‘bloody encounter.”

It was gathered that the vandals had vandalized one of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines in the area and were siphoning fuel, when the DSS operatives arrived the scene. The hoodlums, opened fire on them.

It was also gathered that the vandals had prior information about the arrival of the DSS as the operatives were taken by surprise.

The police source said, ‘‘it was a total war between vandals and the DSS operatives. Nine of them were killed but the incident was not reported in our station at Owotu. The DSS personnel would have reported at the station before going to confront the vandals.

“They did not book for entry and that was why we did not know what happened until the damage had been done.

“We heard sporadic gun shots that lasted for about 20 minutes. Before we could arrive the place, the vandals had left the scene.

“We saw some bodies believed to be those of the DSS operatives on the ground. Some of the bodies have been removed by DSS operatives.

“I believe some of the vandals may have also lost their lives. Apparently, the vandals had taken them away.

“What we gathered is that NNPC management made a distress call to DSS that some Vandals were siphoning fuel from their pipeline. The Operatives were responding to distress call when they were ambushed. Our Divisional Police Officer (DPO) has gone to brief the Commissioner of Police on the development,” the source disclosed.

The source further assured that with the reinforcement in place, sooner than later, the brains behind the massacre would be caught and made to face the law.
