Abia had stepped up its COVID-19 response by commencing testing for the virus in the state after taking delivery of some diagnostic equipment ordered from the United States by Governor Ikpeazu in June.

Prior to testing positive and isolating himself, the Abia governor had placed orders for two GeneXpert equipment on behalf of the state government.

The state had also received the donation of one PCR machine from the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria.

The equipment were deployed to three laboratories established at the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Umuahia, the Amaracha Isolation Centre and a facility in Aba.
