Abia State Environmental Boss Sacked Over ‘Lapses In Waste Management’– SSG

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, decided to sack Chief Rowland Nwakanma, the Deputy General Manager, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Aba and all local government waste management zonal heads in Aba due to lapses in management of waste in the state..

A government special announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Chris Ezem, said only the local government waste management zonal heads in Aba- Owerri road, Ikot Ekpene road and Express were exempted.

“All the Sweepers in these areas are not affected and should continue to discharge their daily duties of keeping the roads clean,” the statement said.

The Commissioner for Environment has been mandated to “takeover and oversee Aba Waste Management and to immediately advertise for the engagement of Professional Waste Managers to handle the Various Zones.”

The statement further stated that the Abia State government will henceforth not “condone any lapses in the waste management effort in Aba and Umuahia and accordingly expect immediate evacuation of all residual wastes in all locations around the city of Aba and Umuahia without any delay.”

Recall that Okezie Ikpeazu had last week approved the immediate sacking of the General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) in-charge of disposal and management of both domestic and industrial wastes in Umuahia,Mr. Eze Okwulehie.
