Abia Varsity Sealed Over Tax Evasion

Academic activities were on Tuesday disrupted at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Abia State, after officials of the state Board of Internal Revenue sealed the varsity’s main gate.

According to an eye witness, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, the BIR officials were accompanied by security operatives and a court bailiff.

Students and workers of the institution were denied entrance to the campus from the main gate.

It was further gathered that the varsity was sealed over non-remittance of tax deductions from members of its staff in the tune of N120 billion.

The order, which was issued by the Umuahia High Court, was signed by Justice Kelvin Wosu.

The court order read in part “that the university has been owing the BIR the sum of N120, 751,998 which became due to the board and the institution has refused to remit within the time limited by the demand notice.”
