Abuja Community Where It’s Forbidden To Fry Akara

The things you do and the practices you were taught inform who you become. Culture is a broad term that encompasses beliefs, values, norms, and behaviors.

When you go out into the world, you will come into contact with people from different backgrounds and way of life. It’s a good rule of thumb to honor cultural diversity with your actions.

In the world today, there are people living in communities with different beliefs and cultural diversity and one of such is ‘Chukuku village’ in Kuje, a suburb in Abuja where it is a taboo to fry akara.

The Chief of Chukuku Community, Bikko Usman while speaking on the development said there are no specific reasons that residents of the community do not fry akara.

He said, “We relocated from one part of the Chukuku village where we don’t fry akara down to this part, that’s why we still don’t fry akara.

“I can’t tell the reason because its been like that from the other part we relocated from. It has been from generation to generation.”

On whether someone can eat akara in the community even though its not fried in Chukuku, Usman said the akara must be bought from outside the community.

“Yes, you can go inside either Gwagwalada and buy it and bring down here but you cannot fry it here. You can eat it here but can’t fry it here in Chukuku,” he added.

Usman, also revealed that they have been asking the government to build a senior secondary school for the community, adding that this had not been done.

Also speaking, Izuchukwu Uzor, who said he has been in the community for 6 years, confirmed that it is a taboo to fry akara in Chukuku.

He said, “I have been here for like 6 years, in terms of business, the business is moving here.

“When I came to Chukuku, I also heard of it but because I’m not an indigene of this place, I don’t want to go far about that but I have not seen any place that people fry akara along the road in this community.

“You can fry from another community and bring to Chukuku and they will buy it, They will even rush it because it will be as if you brough something new.”
