ABUJA: FRSC Officers Turned Back After Chasing Driver Into Canal

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has a statutory responsibility to make our roads safe, but the unprofessionalism of some of its officers tend to rob off negatively on its image.

Such was the case on Wednesday when some FRSC officials chased an erring driver into a drainage along the Life Camp-Wuse highway.

THE WHISTLER gathered that after chasing the driver into the canal, the FRSC officials turned back and left the driver to sort himself out.

Rescuers at the scene told our correspondent that the driver fell into the drainage opposite the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIO) office in Mabushi, while being chased by the road safety officials.

One of the FRSC officials, our correspondent gathered, is notorious for chasing drivers who flout traffic rules.

The driver, a middle-aged man, was driving a Hyundai Elantra vehicle with registration number RBC-52ND. There was an empty baby sitter at the back seat of the car at the time of the accident.

He told our correspondent that the road safety officials started chasing him after he overtook a car in front of him that was stopped by the officials.

The accident caused traffic gridlock which cleared after the vehicle was towed away.

Meanwhile, THE WHISTLER recalls that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, had at different times warned officers against chasing erring motorists no matter the traffic offence committed.

Boboye’s warnings followed media reports of cases of accidents caused by FRSC officers chasing drivers who disobeyed traffic rules.

“The Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, condemned the act as it is our rule that officers should not chase any erring motorist.

“Rather the vehicle number should be taken and the offender will in no time be arrested through our drivers’ licence portal.

“As a paramilitary agency, investigation must be carried out and if the officers are found guilty, they will be dealt with accordingly,” FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, had said in an interview.
