Abuja Residents Trek To Work As Keke NAPEP Riders Ground Activities

Residents of Abuja on Tuesday morning lamented the lack of tricycle movement in Gwarinpa and other parts of the town making transportation difficult and more expensive for them, as some have resorted to trekking.

This was observed by The Whistler as one of the residents who spoke to our correspondent lamented bitterly of the stress he had to go through to get to his office.

The young man said “I had to trek from Gwarimpa express to 2nd avenue just to get to my office. My whole body is in a mess and I am so tired.

A nursing mother also expressed her anger saying normally “we are charged N50 to our destination with the Keke but now life will be hard because the taxis are charging us N100.”

The leadership of the tricycle owners Association of Nigeria had raised alarm on Monday that there was a plan to ban their operations in the federal capital territory.

The president of the association Augustine Akpe called on the intervention of the government saying the operators have suffered intimidation from men in uniform for 17 years.

However,  the alleged plan to ban their operations will affect the total of 40,000 operators who come from different states in search of greener pastures in the capital city.

Similarly, in 2018 activities were also grounded in parts of the federal capital territory as commercial tricycle drivers protested alleged attack by members of a Joint Task Force.

The protest, which was reportedly caused by Keke Napep riders led to the destruction of about 50 tricycles.
