Adesola Becomes Ecobank’s First Female Chairman In Bank’s 32- Year History

Ecobank Nigeria Ltd has appointed its first female Board Chairman, Bola Adesola, the bank confirmed in a statement sent to THE WHISTLER.

She has set the bank’s record as the first female Board Chair since its 32 years of incorporation in 1989.

Adesola has joined female big shots like Yemisi Edun, MD of the First City Monument Bank (FCMB); and Miriam Olusanya, MD of GTBank, a subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO).

The bank also appointed two other non-executive directors, Mrs. Titilayo Olujobi and Mrs. Bimbola Wright.

Adesola’s appointment follows the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past board chair, John Aboh.

The bank said, “Mrs. Bola Adesola who has also been appointed as the Chairman of the Board, following the end of tenure of Mr. John Aboh, is a highly respected professional with over thirty-three (33) years of experience in the banking sector.

“She has commendable leadership qualities and successfully driven expansion initiatives in several banks. Mrs. Adesola retired from Standard Chartered Bank as the Senior Vice-Chairman, Africa.”

The bank explained that prior to Adesola’s appointment, she was the Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer for Standard Chartered Nigeria and West Africa for eight years with oversight over the bank’s West African subsidiaries, including Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Cameroun.

“Mrs. Adesola was also the Chairperson of the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Mauritius and a Director at Standard Chartered, Ghana,” said Ecobank.

The lender revealed that the new appointees have distinguished themselves in their various careers bringing with them a wealth of experience in the financial services industry.

On her new role, Adesola said her appointment would boost the bank’s aspiration to the Nigerian financial market.

I would also like to express my thanks to my predecessor, Mr. John Aboh, a consummate and respected banker for a very successful tenure and wish him all the best for the future,” said the new board chair.

Patrick Akinwuntan who is the bank’s Managing Director pledged relentless support for the new directors.

He said, “The entire staff and Management of Ecobank Nigeria warmly welcome Mrs. Bola Adesola and the other new directors to the Board. We will give them our full support in ensuring the actualization of the Bank’s strategic plans in Nigeria.
