AFCON: Egypt Strikes Late To Knock Out Morrocco

Egypt is through to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a late win against Morocco at the Stade de Port Gentil on Sunday night.

Substitute Mahmoud Abdel-Moneim scrambled in the winner in the 88th minute to ultimately end Herve Renard’s dream of winning three back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations crowns.

The French coach had won the AFCON title in the previous two tournaments with Zambia and Ivory Coast.

Morocco, who were the better side of the night, missed a host of good chances before conceding late, when Juventus defender Meghi Benatia failed to clear a loose ball.

The result means Egypt have still not conceded a goal in four games in Gabon.

“It was a very complicated match for both teams for 94 minutes. We both had chances but we were lucky to get the goal from a dead ball,” said Egyptian coach Hector Cuper.

The Pharaohs will now play Burkina Faso in the semi-finals in Libreville on Wednesday.

In Sunday’s other quarter-final, Ghana beat DR Congo 2-1 to set up a meeting with Cameroon, who knocked out Senegal.
