Afghanistan: Putin Wants Global Recognition For Taliban As Biden’s Approval Rating Drops In U.S.

Following the victory of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Russia’s president Vladimir Putin on Friday called on the international community to recognize the group so that diplomatic relations could be established.

“You need to think about the fact that the sooner the Taliban enters, so to speak, the community of civilized nations, the easier it will be to enter into contact, communicate and somehow influence and ask some questions,” Putin told an audience as quoted by Bloomberg.

Recall that the Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 31 after the United States military ended 20 years of war in the country by completely withdrawing its troops and evacuating more  than 120,000 people in line with US President Joe Biden’s directive.

The development has, however, generated mixed reactions in the U S.

According to a survey conducted among 1,605 U.S. adults by Yahoo News/YouGov poll , many Americans agree with the decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan but much more citizens are dissatisfied with the way the  withdrawal was implemented by Joe Biden’s presidency which had caused the death of about 12 US soldiers.

The approval ratings were 44 percent while 49 percent disapproved of Biden’s leadership on Afghanistan.

But Biden had insisted that the withdrawal was in the best interest of the US, adding that his government would use other means to get Americans left behind out as well as fight terrorism globally.

“The fundamental obligation of a President, in my opinion, is to defend and protect America — not against threats of 2001, but against the threats of 2021 and tomorrow.

“That is the guiding principle behind my decisions about Afghanistan.  I simply do not believe that the safety and security of America is enhanced by continuing to deploy thousands of American troops and spending billions of dollars a year in Afghanistan,” Biden had maintained.
