Afghanistan: Taliban Leader, US Govt Meet For Peace Talks

Co-founder of the fundamentalist Taliban group, Mullah Beradar, has met with the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to discuss on how to attain peace in Afghanistan.

The meeting started in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday.

“Met with Taliban Political Deputy Mullah Beradar to welcome the launch of Afghan peace negotiations.

“The Taliban must seize this opportunity to forge a political settlement and reach a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire to end 40 years of war.

“This effort must be Afghan led,” Pompeo announced in a tweet on Saturday.

The meeting, which involves Middle East stakeholders was initiated by the US government.

“It is remarkable – and a testament to the human spirit – that the pain and patterns of destruction are no match for the enduring hopes for peace held by the Afghan people, and their many friends,” Pompeo had stated.

Afghan, as a nation has been rattled by age-long violence between the Taliban and the state.

Although, Mullar was captured in Pakistan in 2010, the US government negotiated his release in 2018.
