Aliyu Signs N758.7bn 2026 Budget Into Law

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has signed into law the 2026 Appropriation Bill totaling N758.7bn, describing it as a people-oriented budget shaped by the needs and aspirations of citizens.

The Governor assented to the bill in Sokoto shortly after its passage by the Sokoto State House of Assembly.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Aliyu said the 2026 budget was the outcome of extensive consultations with residents across the state through town hall meetings held prior to its presentation.

According to him, the budget reflects the views and priorities expressed by the people during the engagements.

He disclosed that recurrent expenditure accounts for only 19 per cent of the total budget size, noting that the administration deliberately prioritised capital spending to drive development.

“This approach is consistent with the policy introduced by our leader, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, which stipulates that recurrent expenditure should not exceed 30 per cent of the total budget,” the Governor said.

He commended the Sokoto State House of Assembly for its detailed scrutiny of the bill and its timely passage, describing the collaboration between the executive and legislative arms as key to effective governance.

He, however, cautioned commissioners and heads of ministries, departments, and agencies to strictly adhere to the budgetary allocations approved for their MDAs.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on its campaign promises, particularly in critical sectors of development, and thanked the people of the state for their continued support and prayers.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, said the legislature ensured that the 2026 Appropriation Bill was thoroughly scrutinised to reflect the interests of the electorate.

He commended the Governor for prioritising key sectors such as security, agriculture, healthcare, water supply, education, and human capital development.
