The Lagos government had come under intense criticism, after it increased its Land Use Charge.

Hundreds of Lagosians led by the Ikeja chapter of Nigeria Bar Association, on Tuesday took to streets in protest against recent increases in taxes and charges paid by the state government.

The lawyers were joined by other civil society groups, who matched from the Bar Centre of the Ikeja High Court and then to the Governor’s office.

The Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration had reportedly begun the enforcement of about 400% increment in Land Use Charge, Car Registration and Litigation fee in the state.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, had earlier clarified the figures on the rate for the newly reviewed Land Use Charge Law of 2018.

He described the law as a progressive enactment duly made by the House of Assembly and handed over to the executive for implementation in the overall interest of the people.

The commissioner told residents in the state to disregard the enormous figures being circulated on social media, noting that many of the calculations were based on arrears of many years of non-payment.
