American Leads Campaign Against Stereotyping Muslim Women

Amani al- Khatahtbeh from New Jersey, United States says her passion in life is to change the narratives against Muslim women.

In a Deutsche Welle (DW) news tweet on Friday, Khatahtbeh said the way she was raised inspired her to lead a blog (Muslim Girl) that would build a global consciousness of Muslim women as contributors to the world.

“The only reflection of myself that I ever saw in the news were on orange jumpsuits on men that look like my father or Muslim women hidden behind face veils that were always silent and portrayed to be oppressed.

“I went through puberty and the most difficult years of a young person’s life really under one of the biggest assaults of Muslim identity in modern American history, she added.

According to her, the blog aims at making Muslim women to “simply try to be who we are and live up to that and be as real as possible.

“I wish I had a space like Muslim Girl to grow up on when I was younger, it probably would have completely changed my whole life,” she said.
