Amosun Congratulates Anthony Joshua, Calls Him ‘Pride Of Ogun State’

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, has congratulated Nigerian-born British boxer Anthony Joshua for successfully defending the WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles.

Amosun, in a statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Otunba Dayo Adeneye, described the 28-year-old Joshua, an indigene of Ogun State, as a pride to the state and the nation as a whole.

Joshua on Saturday defeated Carlos Takam with a knock-out in the 10th-round in front of 80,000 spectators at the Principality Stadium, England.

“His strings of success are simply a manifestation of the gene of a true son of Ogun State, who are born to be victorious and do exploits in all fields of human endeavour.

“It also demonstrates the ‘Ogun Standard’, which is the mantra of the new Ogun State, noted for excellence” he added.

The Governor said the development can also be seen from the standpoint of the doggedness and determination of an average Nigerian.

Former world heavyweight champions, Wladimir Klitschko, also joined in congratulating Joshua, over the win last weekend.

Klitschko, who himself was floored by Joshua in the 11th round in front of 90,000 fans in April, simply tweeted on Monday morning: “Congrats Champ and keep on punching!”

The 41-year-old Ukrainian, who held various titles in a glorious 21-year career which started as a professional after winning Olympic gold at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, has retired from the sport.
