Anambra: Armed Robbers Engaged Police In Gun Duel, Two Killed

The Anambra State Police Command, Friday night, announced the killing of two suspected criminals operating on a motorcycle along St Stephen’s, by Ibekwe Street, Inland town, Onitsha, after a gun duel.

The state command’s police public relations officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, in a release made available to THE WHISTLER in Awka, said the suspects opened fire on the police operatives who confronted them after receiving a distress call.

According to Mr Mohammed in the statement, “On the 12/11/2020, at about 4:45pm, there was a distress call that two suspected armed robbery gang was operating on a motorcycle along St Stephen’s by Ibekwe Street, Inland town, Onitsha.

“Following the distress call, police operatives attached to the Area Command, Onitsha, in conjunction with Adonidu vigilante group, quickly responded and rushed to the scene. As soon as the suspected armed robbers sighted the police, they engaged them in a fierce gun battle. In the process, the suspects were fatally wounded and overpowered. The injured suspects were rushed to the General Hospital, Onitsha, for treatment, but were certified dead on arrival by a medical doctor. Their corpses were deposited at the mortuary.”

THE WHISTLER reports that one fabricated barreta pistol with three rounds of .9mm live ammunition and the operational motorcycle were recovered from the suspects and registered as exhibits.

Meanwhile, the command has assured residents of the state of their ‘safety before, during and after this ember period’, urging them ‘not to relent in providing timely information for prompt response’.
