Anambra Covid-19 Violators Arraigned In Court

The Anambra State government, through the state Covid-19 Protocols Taskforce, has begun the arrest of people who flout Covid-19 safety laws in Awka and its environs.

This is in line with the efforts of the Anambra State government toward controlling the spread of the virus.

THE WHISTLER gathered that the taskforce began the exercise at Dr Alex Ekwueme square in Awka, through Arroma junction, Unizik junction, Kwata roundabout, and Amawbia junction, and arrested many defaulters in the process.

The taskforce, headed by the SSA to Governor Willie Obiano on legal matters, Barr Chika Ekwenugo, was accompanied by officers and men of the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, FRSC and the state traffic management agency, ATMA.

It was gathered that a majority of those arrested were found on tricycles, commercial buses and at roadsides. They did not wear facemasks; some wore them improperly while others had theirs in pockets, a source said.

Our correspondent gathered that the defaulters were arraigned at the Magistrates’ Court, Amawbia. Those convicted were made to perform community services or pay N10, 000 fine or both in accordance with the state Covid-19 law.
