Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta announced on Friday that he will not continue at Catalan side next season.

In a packed press room, he had a hard time holding back his emotions, as the Spanish midfielder was in tears while he confirmed his imminent departure from the Camp Nou.

“It’s a very difficult day for me, to be here saying goodbye when I’ve spent my whole life here at Barcelona.

“A great deal of who I am, is down to Barca and La Masia – I am very thankful to them,” he said.

The Spanish international joined the youth system at the age of 12 before making his first-team debut in the 2002-03 season and hence enjoyed a glittering career for the club.

The 33-year-old has so far made 669 appearances in 16 seasons, winning 31 trophies with Barca and three major tournaments for Spain.

Inesta was denied a fifth Champions League crown when Barca were eliminated by A.S. Roma in the quarter-finals.

The Spanish international has been closely linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, although he refused to confirm he will be joining Chongqing Dangdai Lifan as has been widely reported.

But the Midfielder said he will not play in Europe after Barca because he cannot play against them.

“There are still things to be sorted,” the Spaniard said.

“I have said I will never play against Barça, so I won’t play in Europe,” he added.
