The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu has nullified the election of Uche Ekwunife of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had appealed against the ruling of the election tribunal that upheld the victory of Ekwunife.

However, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe of APGA did not succeed in his appeal against Dr. Andy Ubah of the PDP who election was upheld by the appellate court.

A lead judgement read by Justice Datijo Yahaya stated that the election of Mrs Ekwunife on April 11, 2015, did not meet the prescription of the Electoral Act, and ordered for fresh election to be held within 90 days.

Reacting to the judgement, Mrs. Ekwunife called on her supporters to remain calm, expressing the optimism that she will win election into the senatorial zone again, faulting the judgement as fatal to principles of democracy.

“The judgement is a judgement of man. The court acted as a Father Christmas by awarding to Chief Victor Umeh what he did not ask. But I take the judgement in good faith believing that my victory at the polls was an act of God. I assure my supporters that we will emerge victorious even as I thank Ndi Anambra central for their supports so far.”
