Army Officer Killed As Security Agents, Smugglers Clash In Oyo

An officer of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Josiah Peter, has been killed when security agents and armed smugglers clashed at Igbo-Ora in the Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Residents told our correspondent that a team of Federal Operation Unit of the Customs had intercepted a bus load of foreign rice and the smugglers engaged the Customs officers in a gun duel to escape with the contraband.

One of the residents told journalists that three persons including the army officer were killed in the exchange of gunfire while some persons were also reportedly injured.

The clash happened on Thursday and the killing of the army officer was said to have caused panic in some areas in the community.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the Oyo State Police Command, Olugbenga Fadeyi, when contacted said the army officer was shot and injured and he later died.

The PPRO said an army lieutenant was shot and injured as a result of the clash. He said Peter later died.

.He said, “Information received revealed that smugglers attacked Federal Operation Unit, FOU Customs, at Igboora.

“In a swift response to assist the FOU team, the Border Drill Patrol also came under attack and one lieutenant of the Nigerian Army was shot and later died.”
