Assault: Why We Freed Senator Elisha Abbo – Police

Twenty four hours after taking him into custody for alleged assault, the police command in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, released Senator Elisha Abbo on Friday.

Abbo had been detained by the police following emergence of a viral video that showed him allegedly harassing and assaulting some women at an adult toy shop in Abuja.

Confirming the lawmaker’s bail to Premium Times on Friday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, said “a set of administrative conditions” for Abbo’s bail were met on Friday afternoon.

Abbo, who was severely criticized after the assault video surfaced online, had apologized and asked for forgiveness for harassing the sales rep at the sex toy shop and assaulting a nursing mother at the shop.

He had honoured the invitation of the police and was consequently taken into custody on Thursday.

Speaking further on Abbo’s release, CP Ciroma said conditions for which the lawmaker was released were “stringent enough to secure his return to the investigators as may be necessary”.

It is expected that the police would charge Abbo to court after further subjecting the assault video to examination.
