ASUU Says Members Need Prayers To Survive

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says that divine intervention is needed if lecturers are to survive the difficult times they have found themselves.

The union revealed that the federal government was yet to pay about 15,000 of the union members their salaries since February 2020 while others were yet to receive December 2020 salary.

One of ASUU’s branch Chairmen, Dr. Dele Ashiru (of the University of Lagos) made the claim on Sunday through his WhatsApp (status)line, seen by our correspondent.

Ashiru said that it was pitiful that after the union had called off its nine months strike, 30,000 lecturers have also not received December salaries.

His post reads: “Facts: May God Intervene! ASUU Strike suspended on 22 December 2020…About 30,000 lecturers are still waiting for their December salaries. About 15, 000 lecturers have not been paid salaries since February 2020 to date. (11 months and they have heavy responsibilities on them)”

THE WHISTLER had reported that ASUU, shortly after it conditionally called off its strike, said that government was not sincere with lecturers.

The federal government had promised to release about 70 billion naira for lecturers’ Earned Academic Allowances as well as Revitalization of universities.

But Ashiru’s post meant that the federal government was breaching parts of its agreement with the union.

Tertiary academic activities are expected to resume by January 18 and beyond.
