Atiku Excites Women On Gender Restructuring

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar caused excitement among Nigerian women at a town hall meeting in Abuja on Wednesday over his plans for women.

Leaders of different women groups in the country who attended the meeting got the opportunity to ask the former Vice President direct questions about what he has in stock for women.

Responding to a question on gender restructuring, he promised to support women to win more elective positions, including state governors and deputy governors.

The presidential aspirant revealed that it had been his desire to see the emergence of women deputy governors in the North since his days as Vice President, adding that he used his resources to ensure women are elected as deputy governors in the North but failed.

In response to another question on young women marginalized in government, he said the priority of his administration would be to empower young people through job creation.

“Young women are not only marginalized, but they have no jobs. How to create jobs for the youth will be the priority of our administration,” he stated.

A lady representing the Coalition of Society for the Rights of Older Persons asked what the aspirant would do to help the aged if elected, and Atiku responded by empathizing with them and promising to work with experts who would advise his government on how to include them in development plans.

He promised that his administration would consider the establishment of a universal social pension scheme for older people, adding “It is essential to help them. We will work on how to entrench that policy in governance.”

Rita Odochie, a Nollywood top actress, was one of hundreds of women who attended the event. She also wanted to know Atiku’s plan for Nollywood.

“The policy for support of Nollywood will continue under me and I will improve it to ensure it earns more foreign exchange for the country,” he declared.

At the end of the event, the women sang praise songs for Atiku and called him “our in-coming president.”
