Atiku Reacts To Bayelsa Supreme Court Verdict: Judiciary Has Freed Itself
A former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Bayelsa state gubernatorial elections, Senator Douye Diri, who was on Thursday declared the governor-elect of by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had earlier nullified the victory of David Lyon, who had emerged as the governor-elect after the governor rerun election in November 2019.
Abubakar reacted in a tweet on Thursday, following the Supreme court verdict ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return the next contestant with the highest votes in the poll.
THE WHISTLER reported that the apex court’s nullification of the election came ahead of the inauguration of the Lyon as the governor of Bayelsa.
Atiku said that Diri (who polled 143, 172 votes) was capable of moving the state to the next level and that his portfolio proves that he can re-position the state towards socio-economic development.
Abubakar, who was the 2019 PDP presidential flagbearer, praised the verdict, adding that the judgment provides an opportunity for the PDP to show it is a people-oriented party.
“The Lords Justices have given us another opportunity to show Nigerians that power belongs to the people, and we must make good use of this opportunity,” he tweeted.
He also urged the apex court to be impartial in its judgment.
“The people of Nigeria are behind the apex court in whatever they do to free themselves from the dominance of dictatorial forces,” he stated in the tweet.
