Australian Open: Roger Federer Defeats Tomas Berdych To Reach Last-Four

Defending Champion Roger Federer on Wednesday, defeated Tomas Berdych to reached his 14th Australian Open semi-final.

The tournament’s second seed swept past No. 19 seed Berdych 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals in the Rod Laver Arena.

It was their 10th meeting at Grand Slams, and an eighth win for the Swiss player.

36-year-old Federer now becomes the oldest man to reach the semifinals at Melbourne Park since Ken Rosewall did it in 1977 at age 42 and the oldest man to advance to the final four at any major since Jimmy Connors at the 1991 US Open at age 39.

“I hung around, got a bit lucky, a bit angry, a frustrated, maybe at the umpire, but I actually thought the call was good anyway!

“I was just frustrated and a bit antsy. I’m happy I got out of that first set. It ended up being key to the match. Tomas was great,” said Federer.

The 36-year-old Swizz will face unseeded 21-year-old Hyeon Chung of South Korea in the last four on Friday.

Hyeon earlier on Wednesday defeated America’s Tenny Sandgren 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-3.

21-year-old Hyeon is the first Korean to reach the Grand Slam Semi-final after the victory.

In the other Semi-final game to be played, Britain’s Kyle Edmund takes on sixth seed Marin Cilic of Croatia on Thursday.
