B/Haram: ‘We’re Making Contacts,’ Presidency Speaks On Viral Video Of Kidnapped Aid Workers

The presidency has said contacts are being made to secure the release of the female aid worker and five male colleagues, kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

A viral video had shown the woman who claimed to be the abducted aid worker begging for her release alongside her colleagues.

She had also claimed Alice and Leah Sharibu have been killed because the government failed to “do something”.

Sharibu was among the 112 girls kidnapped from the Girls Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State by Boko Haram sect February 19, 2018.

But the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in reaction said the victims’ abductors were being engaged.

He said, “The Presidency has been briefed by the responsible government agency about the disturbing video showing our citizens, the humanitarian aid workers held captive.

“Beside these aid workers, there are some others about whom this engagement is about-Leah Sharibu, a religious leader and all the others.

“Presidency has been given assurances that contact is being made and the captors are being talked to,” he wrote.

“These discussions have been ongoing even before this time and what this latest incident has done is to bring urgency to the efforts that the secret service is making.

“Government is making contacts, in the hope that the captors will see a reason to not visit hardship or even harm on these innocent individuals. Government is working.”

Recall that the aid worker and her colleagues were abducted after their convoy was attacked on Thursday last week.
