Bad Governance, Corruption Fueling Insecurity In Nigeria–ICPC Boss

The Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, has stated that bad governance and corruption is fueling insecurity in Nigeria.

Owasanoye made this statement in Abuja while speaking as a Guest Lecturer to Course 30 Participants of the National Defence College,Nigeria.

He spoke on the topic: ‘Whole of Society Approach in the Fight Against Corruption and Human Security in Nigeria.’

The ICPC Boss, according to a statement issued by the Commission noted that corruption has weakened the state and destroyed its capacity to provide the requisite training and equipment for security and paramilitary agencies.

Owasanoye said, “Bad governance, corruption and the collapse of the rule of law lead to insecurity.”

On how pervasive corruption in defense spending can impact a country’s peace and security, the ICPC Boss said a single transaction of diversion of huge sums could have immediate impact that may become irreversible.

He said, “Direct looting of treasury, Illicit Financial Flows, tax evasion, misapplication of funds, budget padding, ghost workers, deliberate elephant projects, project abandonment, contracts and procurement abuse have huge implications on development and human security.

“Without development, there can be no peace or security and without peace and security human development is a mirage,”
