Banking Index Declines As All Share Index Rose To 27, 871 Points

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) started on a positive note during Tuesday’s trading session as All Share Index (ASI) rose by 0.4% to 27, 871.90 points, while the banking index continued its losing streak by -0.4%.

The data provided by the Nigerian Bourse attributed the rise in the ASI to the performance of MTN Nigeria which rose by +4.4%, while WAPCO and GTB rose by +3.0% and +0.8% respectively.

Recall that the ASI during the Monday trading session declined by 1.1% to end at 27, 773.20 points.

Market Capitalisation increased with N51.9 billion to end at N14.516 trillion after it declined by N153.6 billion on Monday.

Activity level improved during the trading session as the volume traded on the Exchange rose by 38.0% to end at 2767.3 million units, while the value traded rose by 92.85% to the tune of N3.7 billion.


Despite decline in the banking index by -0.4%, the sector led in the volume of trade as UBA led the chart after it traded 49.5 million units, while GTB followed closely with 41.4 million units while zenith traded 30.2 million.

GTB traded equities worth N1.2 billion, Zenith Bank Plc N606,8 million, while MTN Nigeria traded shares valued at N537.7 million.

The Consumer Goods index led the decline chart across the different sectors in the Bourse as it down by -1.3%, due to -4.5% loss in Dangote Sugar Plc and the -8.8% loss recorded by International Brews Plc (INTBREW).

 Industrial Goods trailed by -0.8% due to -1.9% decline recorded in BUA CEMENT Plc.

Insurance index trailed by -0.6% due to the fall in the share price of LINK ASSURE Plc by -0.8%and SOVRENINS by -9.1%.   


13 stocks advanced compared with 16 decliners as UAC of Nigeria Plc. led the gainers chart with +9.4%, while JAPAUL OIL and CADBURY followed with +8.3% and +4.4% respectively.

CAVERTON Offshore Support Plc. led the loser’s chart with a loss of -9.9%, while MRS Oil Nig. Plc. and Sovereign Trust Insurance followed with -9.8% and -9.1% respectively.
