Oyo State Governor, Abiola Isiaka Ajimobi, has told pupils who took part in a protest against government’s proposed education initiative to pen an apology letter to him else their schools will remain locked.

This was according to the Chairman National Association of Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Abiodun Jimoh, after a meeting with the governor in the state, appealing to him to reopen the schools shut down in reaction to the protests.

“The governor said that the heads of the schools should write letters of apology to the government,” Jimoh said

In response to Ajimobi’s directive, the association assured the governor that head teachers of the affected school tender their apology letters to him, adding the pupils need to go back to school.

“We have promised him that we will meet with the heads of the schools to immediately write the letter in the interest of the pupils.

“We are fed up with the strike action and our children staying at home for so long. We want them back in school and for teachers to resume at their duty posts.”

Students in the state took to the street last month, to protest against the state government’s proposed public/private participatory management of schools, saying that the governor had sold their schools.

The Oyo state government had since denied the allegation, claiming it was a preparatory initiative aimed at boosting the education sector of the state.

The governor accused head teachers in Oyo state of instructing their pupils to insult him; he then insisted they must tender an apology to him before their schools can be reopened.

Jimoh also said that the association would wade into the face-off between labour and government, stressing that the Oyo State government is predisposed to dialogue with labour any time.

Reports emerged last week that labor leader, Waheed Olojede, who is the chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), alongside six other members were detained for disrupting the meeting to discuss the reopening of schools last week.
