Beggars Reject Rehabilitation, Return To The Streets

Beggars in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have returned to the streets to beg for alms.

This is coming months after the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) evicted them from the streets to a rehabilitation centre in Bwari, Abuja.

According to reports, the panhandlers could no longer cope in the rehabilitation centre, as the rules were just too strict for them to handle.

The beggars were seen to have resumed to the alms begging business around Kubwa, Jabi, Zuba, and other parts of the city.

Meanwhile, Nasir Danmallam, AEPB Deputy Director said over 861 beggars were taken from the streets between January and April, adding that the general public never made the job easy for the board because they often time prevent them from taking over the beggars.

“We have been seeing buckets of them (beggars) and when we get them the second time, we take them to Bwari rehabilitation centre. They are very aggressive; some of them have stabbed our boys in the course of arresting them. The public also show unnecessary sympathy so we have obstruction from the members of the public,” Danmallam said.
