Blackberry Sues Facebook Over Patent Infringement

BlackBerry filed a lawsuit in California on Tuesday against Facebook, alleging that the social network and its WhatsApp and Instagram subsidiaries infringed on its messaging app patents.

According to CNN, the software company says Facebook is “using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place”.

Facebook has said it is ready to fight, adding that the Canadian company has abandoned its efforts to innovate.

‘’Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight,’’ Facebook’s Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal said.

Recall that BlackBerry which was an early leader in the messaging market with the success of its Smartphone’s and BlackBerry Messenger product in the mid-2000s, had also filed a patent infringement suit against Nokia in February 2017.
