Borno Govt To Stop Welfare Assistance To Families With Out Of School Children

In a move to kill Boko Haram Ideology, the Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has appealed to parents to allow their children enrol in schools saying that social welfare assistance will be restricted to those who allow their children and wards to attend schools.

Zulum made the disclosure on Sunday during his third and final day humanitarian trip to Damasak, in the shores of Lake Chad, where a total of 1,163 children of Internally Displaced Persons were enrolled into primary schools.

In a Twitter post on Monday, he said the pupils, who hailed from Guzamala and Abadam Local Government Areas in northern Borno, had been out of school since the attacks on their communities by insurgents.

“Where functional schools are provided by government, social welfare assistance from government will eventually be restricted to parents who allow their children and wards to attend schools whether western or combined curriculum of Islamic and western education,” he said.

The governor also encouraged secondary school students in the community and those who have written their senior schools certificate exams to aspire for higher education, adding government would support them to actualize their dreams.

He was accompanied by the senator representing northern Borno, Senator Abubakar Kyari, who is also an indigene of Damasak. Also on the trip is the state caretaker chairman of the All Progressives Congress , Ali Bukar Dalori, commissioner for agric, Engr Bukar Talba and some stakeholders with affiliation to Mobbar LGA.
