BREAKING: Aviation Workers To Shut Down Airport Operations For One-Day Strike, Protest

Workers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have been directed to proceed on a one-day warning strike over failure by the federal government to address their plight.

The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), in a statement seen by THE WHISTLER on Wednesday, also directed aviation workers in Lagos to converge at the Freedom Square for a protest.

The unions also asked aviation workers in other states of the country to join the demonstration.

THE WHISTLER had reported how the unions, in August, held a peaceful protest against the federal government’s plan to concession four international airports in the country.

They had carried placards bearing different inscriptions like: “Airport concession lacks transparency,” “Nigerians rise against siege on our common patrimony,” “Job loss looms in the aviation industry” and “FAAN pay our pension liabilities.”

This website also reported how the unions recently shut down operations of Arik Air over alleged non payment of staff salaries since April after placing 90% of the workforce on compulsory leave.

The unions had demanded payment of outstanding salaries arrears, signing of conditions of service, remittance of pension, tax, and statutory deductions to the appropriate authorities and to resolve other anti-labour issues affecting their members.
