Breaking: Awolowo’s Daughter Dies At 79

The eldest daughter of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Mrs Tola Oyediran , has died.

Sources close to the family told our correspondent that Mrs Oyediran died on Friday in her sleep.

She was married to a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof A. B.O.P Oyediran.

She would have clocked 80 on December 1.

Awolowo was the first premier of the old Western Region and died since 1987. But his family is still highly respected in the South West.

Meanwhile, the Yoruba Socio-Cultural Association Worldwide has condoled with the family and the entire Yoruba race.

The National President of the YYSA, Olalekan Hammed, said in a statement that the death of Mrs Oyediran came as a shock to many.

The statement read, “We received the news of Mrs Tola Oyediran, the eldest daughter of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo with shock.

“Her death is a monumental loss to Nigeria has a country. Although during her lifetime, she contributed enormously to the development, unity and peace of this nation, at time like this, much more of her contributions are still needed.

“She lived a worthy life without derailing from the legacy of her father. We say goodbye to a rear gem.”
