Buhari Orders Immediate Reopening Of Four Land Borders

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the reopening of four land borders closed since August 2019.

The president gave the directive on Thursday.

Other borders are expected to reopen on December 31 based on the directive.

The order comes 21 days after the government on November 25 said it would reopen the land “borders soon.”

The Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who announced the development after the virtual Federal Executive Council, listed the four borders to be reopened to include the Seme border in South West, Maigatari and Ilela borders in North West and Mfun borders in South-South region of the country.

But Ahmed insisted that the earlier restriction on the importation of commodities including rice and  poultry products was still effective.

The 16 months long border closure had led to rising inflation and loss in government export revenues to the neighbouring countries.

Nigeria had closed the borders to curtail smuggling activities across the borders.
