UPDATED: CCT Orders Arrest Of Suspended CJN Onnoghen

The Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja, has Issued Bench Warrant Against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The order, coming three days to the 2019 general election, followed an application by the federal government through Aliyu Umar (SAN), for a bench warrant against the suspended CJN after he failed to appear before the CCT for the third time to answer allegations of non-disclosure of his assets after he assumed office in March 2017.

“Under the circumstances, it is my sad duty to address the tribunal on S6 (1) of the Practice Direction of the Tribunal. I hereby humbly apply for a warrant of arrest against the defendant,” he said.

In response to the prosecuting counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awolowo, SAN heading the council of the suspended CJN, urged the tribunal to neglect the application and proceed with hearing Onnoghen’s motion.

However the CCT chairman, Danladi Umar, on Wednesday, February 13, having heard the application by both counsels, directed the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS) to arrest and produce Onnoghen for trial on Friday.
