Mario Mandzukic’s own goal put Les Blues in front early in the first half before Ivan Perisic drew the game level for Croatia with a low shot.

France went ahead again just before the break after Perisic was controversially adjudged to have handled the ball in the box following VAR review. Antoine Griezmann scored the resulting penalty.

Paul Pogba scored France’s third with a curling strike, beating Danijel Subasic, before Kylian Mbappe put the 1998 World champions 4-1 up with a low shot from about 22 yards.

Mbappe becomes only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Brazil legend Pele.

Croatia pulled one back in the 69th minute after a horrendous error from Hugo Lloris. The Spurs keeper gets a backpass, tries to take a touch around Mario Mandzukic and he tackles him and puts it into an empty net.

Mandzukic has become just the fifth player to score in both World Cup and European Cup/Champions League finals, after Ferenc Puskas, Zoltan Czibor, Gerd Muller and Zinedine Zidane.

France coach Deschamps is the third man to win the World Cup as player and coach.

“How marvellous! It’s a young team, who are on the top of the world. Some are champions at the age of 19,” Deschamps said.

“We did not play a huge game but we showed mental quality. And we scored four goals anyway. They deserved to win.

“The group worked so hard and we had some tough moments along the way. It hurt so much to lose the Euro two years ago, but it made us learn too.

“The win is not about me, it’s the players who won the game. For 55 days, we have done a lot of work. It is the supreme coronation. We are proud to be French, to be Blues. The victory in the match belongs to them. Vive le Republic.”
