The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has been ordered to appear before an Ilorin High Court in Kwara State over the continued detention of Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed’s personal assistant, Lekan Alabi.

Alabi is reportedly being held by the police over the Offa robbery incident that claimed at least thirty lives of policemen and civilians in the state on April 5, 2018.

The governor’s aide was reportedly picked up from his residence sometime in May and has been in police custody as they intensified investigation into the robbery incident.

According to reports, the counsel to Alabi, Mr Adelodun Ibrahim SAN, had at a court sitting today decried the continued detention of two of Governor Ahmed’s aides despite a court order asking the police to release them on bail.

The second aide allegedly being held by the police is the Chief of Staff to the governor, Alhaji Babatunde AbdulWahab.

It was learnt that at the court hearing today, IGP Idris, who is a respondent in the suit, failed to send a representation even after being allegedly served court papers as regards the case.

Adelodun told Justice Adebayo Yusuf of the said court that the continued detention of his client by police contravenes provisions of Order 4, Rules 3 and 4 of the Fundamental Rights enforcement procedure rules (2009) as well as Sections 34, 35, 36, 37, 41 And 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Justice Yusuf consequently said in his ruling: “The position of the law is as stated by the leaned silk, however I’m inclined to hear from the respondent to come to court and show cause why the applicant should not be released from their custody, since they have been served the motion on notice.”
