INEC Yanks Off Okorocha’s Name From Senators-Elect List
There are indications that Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, may not make it to the 9th Senate as his name is conspicuously missing in an updated list of Senators-elect uploaded to the website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday.
Okorocha had been recently declared as winner of the Imo West senatorial election. The governor, whose second tenure as governor comes to an end this year, had contested the senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
INEC Returning Officer, Prof Francis Ibeawuchi, had at the collation centre in Orlu declared that Okorocha polled 97,762 votes to defeat Mr Jones Onyereri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP, 68,117), and Osita Izunaso of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA, 30,084).
But in the list of Senators-elect obtained from the INEC website, the field for the winner of Imo West senatorial election was left blank. A remark which says ‘‘declaration made under duress’’ was given as the reason why Okorocha’s name was yanked off from the list.
