Before now there were provisions for the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies.

But the govenor said with the planed termination of pension payment, the state will be able to recoup funds and reduce the cost of governance.

He said, “Mr. Speaker and Honourable Members of the House, in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selflessness in public service, we will be sending a draft executive bill to the House imminently for the repeal of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies.”

Recall that the Lagos House of Assembly had declared that it would not adhere to court judgements mandating the state to repeal its pension law, which will make it possible for the federal government to recover pensions collected by former public office holders.
