BREAKING: Supreme Court Declares Simon Lalong Duly Elected Plateau Governor

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the election of Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Governor of Plateau State in the March 9th gubernatorial election.

Lalong had been declared winner of the 2019 gubernatorial election, polling 595, 582 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sen. Jeremiah Useni of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 546, 813 votes.

Useni had filed an appeal at the apex court to challenge the victory of the candidate of the APC.

The apex court held that the appellant failed to prove the allegation of non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

It held that the concurrent findings of the governorship election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal were correct.

The apex court also said the appellant failed to show how the various names of Simon Lalong enhanced his chances at the March 9 election.

Recall that the Elections Petition Appeal sitting in Jos, Plateau State capital had in November last year upheld the election of Lalong as the duly elected governor of the state.

In the lead judgement delivered by Honourable Justice Adumein Otisi, the appeal of Useni and the PDP was dismissed for lack of merit and align with the election tribunal decision affirming the election of the governor.
