UPDATED: Villarreal Defeats Man United To Win First Europa League
Villarreal FC on Wednesday emerged winners of the Europa League after defeating Manchester United on penalties.
Manchester United suffered a cruel 11-10 penalty shoot-out defeat after the 90 minutes of play and the extratime.
Man United’s goalkeeper, David de Gea missed the last kick which gave the Spanish side victory.
Defeating United at the Stadion Miejski in Gdansk, Poland, gave Villarreal its first EuropaLeague title, while United had hoped for their sixth Europa title.
Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli scored the spotkick and saved de Gea’s attempt to claim their first European.
Gerard Moreno had converted Dani Parejo’s free kick to give Unai Emery’s side the lead in the 29th minute.
Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani found the back of the net after reaching a deflected shot from Marcus Rashford in the 55th minute.
Cavani had more chances to turn the game in United’s favour. Villarreal were the better side during the first half.
In celebration, Villarreal tweeted, “We’ve won the Europa League! Oh my God.”
