Britain Expresses Concerns Over Insecurity In Southeast

The British deputy high commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Peter Thomas, Monday, expressed concerns over the escalating insecurity in the Southeast of Nigeria.

Mr Thomas disclosed this when he visited the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Professor George Obiozor, in Enugu. He said the essence of his visit was to find out ‘why the region has suddenly become violent’.

According to him, ‘the peace in Nigeria is of utmost importance to the United Kingdom’, and believed that the visit would enlighten him on the root causes of insecurity in the region.

Professor Obiozor, in a response, regretted the current insecurity in the zone, and recalled how peaceful Southeast was until recently.

He said it was sad that the current violence was ‘occurring when the call for the Igbo presidency in 2023 has gained traction from probability to possibility’.

He called for restructuring of Nigeria to reflect true federalism, adding that ‘Nigeria owes equity and justice to the Southeast’.

He also commended various interventions of the Department for International Development (DFID) in Nigeria, hoping that they would not be discouraged by the current wave of violence in Nigeria.
