The appointment was made shortly after Idris met with Buhari at the Presidential Villa alongside the outgoing IGP, Solomon Arase, who retired this Tuesday after 35 years in service.
Until his appointment Idris, who is from Niger State, was the AIG in charge of Operations at the Force Headquarters.
