William Ekong’s last-minute goal helped the Super Eagles advance to the semi-finals after an initial goal in the first half by Samuel Chukwueze.

Bongani Zungu had helped Bafana Bafana equalise in the second half, but defender William Ekong scored in the last few minutes to dash South Africa’s hope to proceed in the tournament.

In his congratulatory message, President Buhari tweeted after the match: “Congratulations to the Super Eagles on a well-deserved victory over South Africa, tonight. You represent the resilient and indomitable Nigerian spirit. Two more victories, and the coveted Trophy will come home to us. All Nigerians are looking forward eagerly.”

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar also took to Twitter to congratulate the Nigerian national team, saying: “Congratulations @NGSuperEagles. Great play. Now we are successfully one step away from playing for gold. We are solidly behind you all the way.”
